Because of the presence of different agencies responsible with regulations and management of chemicals in Saudi Arabia, there has been absence of effective rules and regulations controlling pesticide. SFDA has a duty and mandate to control chemicals used by both humans and animals, consequently making it ineffective in achieving its mandate. According to Hashan et al., (2015), the queuing system has been poor in terms of service delivery, taking around 340 working days before clearance in the year 2011 to around 372 working days in the year 2013 (Ibrahim 2010). Saudi Arabia government should establish a different body that deals specifically with chemicals and veterinary medicine, other than the present body in operation that combines both drugs for human consumption with veterinary medicine meant for animals. So ideally, SFDA hasnt been able to effectively deliver on its mandate due to its inability to meet deadlines and comprehensively manage both human and animal chemicals (Ibrahi m 2010). Ministry of Agriculture The ministry of Agriculture was introduced in the times where there was a necessity of the Saudi government to manage its agricultural activities. Therefore the ministry of Agriculture is as old as the Saudi Arabia government itself (Ibrahim 2010). The King appoints the minister in charge of Agriculture to oversee all functions related to the ministry. Ideally, the ministry of Agriculture was called the ministry of water, but was later dissolved and remained ministry of water, environment and Agriculture. However, its functions of managing veterinary medicine were amended later due to necessity to achieve high productivity (Ibrahim 2010). The ministry of Agriculture is headed by the Agriculture Minister who is normally appointed by the King to serve according to the guidance of the constitution. The council of ministers are appointed by the king and are to serve for a stipulated period of time. However, research institutions found within the ministry structure are the ones mandated with the responsibility of accessing the risk associated with usability of pesticides and other veterinary medicines (Ibrahim 2010). For instance, under the ministry, there are food control laboratories and other research institutions who undertake risk assessment for pesticides and other chemicals and advice the ministry accordingly. In Saudi Arabia, the system of governance of ministries is in line with the ruling government, which is tasked with the responsibility of aligning the management of the ministry. The ministry of Agriculture in Saudi Arabia has a role and function of implementing government plans besides undertaking programs meant to safeguard Agriculture and both human and animal health in the Arab kingdom (Elhadj 2006). Therefore, in order to foster food security and to offer protection to both plants, animal and human health, the ministry of Agriculture has been mandated to control and manage licenses for ferti lizer, pesticides and other veterinary drugs and vaccines (Elhadj 2006). In Saudi Arabia, therefore, the ministry of Agriculture has a part to play in regulation and management of pesticides and veterinary medicine ad vaccines (Hassan et al. 2013). The ministry of Agriculture, besides formulating and implementing policies meant to cab food insecurity in Saudi Arabia, is also tasked with a number of other responsibilities which include importation of licenses for various goods ranging from fertilizers, pesticides, biological substance to veterinary medicines (Hassan et al. 2013), monitoring and control of chemicals and other vaccines (however, the ministry of Agriculture approves the sale of vaccines and chemicals subject to the approval of the ministry of health.), the management of animal resources, management of fisheries and control of locust. In order to effectively manage animal resources and control locusts, the ministry needs to use chemicals and pesticides that have been approved by the ministry of health (AVMA 2013). It also institute forums that are meant to create awareness to the members of the public regarding the use of pesticides and how to identify genuine pesticides and chemicals circulating in the market (Ibra him 2010). It also assessess the risk exposure of both locally available and imported drugs in Saudi Arabia. The ministry of Agriculture has a sole purpose of implementing economic policies meant to safeguard the countrys food security (Kajenthira et al. 2015). The ministry of Agriculture in Saudi Arabia has different divisions within it, with each division working towards the achievement of the ministries objectives. Therefore, because of the various sub-divisions found within the ministry, the ministry has not been very successful in control and management of pesticides in Saudi Arabia. This is because its core mandates it to implement economic policies meant to contain food insecurity in the kingdom ("Ministry of Agriculture - SAMIRAD (Saudi Arabia Market Information Resource)" 2016). The ministry of Agriculture in Saudi Arabia has many functions, making the role of controlling pesticides a subsidiary role. Kafka paints them as characters who genuinely want their son to accept these social constraints because they themselves do not see the constraints in the first place. It is this fear of the unknown and irregular that scares them so when Gregor does not come out of his room, and when he does, it is his new physical identity that terrifies them. It can be said that Gregors human identity crumbles not because of his own loss of faith in his own identity, but because of everyone elses rejection of him as human. To explain this point, I refer to Immanuel Kants influential Copernican Revolution and how it can link into the idea of alienation and identity being subjective to each person, or in this case, a number of people whose own perception is shared with others due to the socio-normative ideas they are all told by society. In his Critique of Pure Reason, Immanuel Kant says that: Hitherto it has been assumed that all our knowledge must conform to objects. But all attempts to extend our knowledge of objects by establishing something in regard to them a priori, by means of concepts, have, on this assumption, ended in failure. We must therefore make trial whether we may not have more success in the tasks of metaphysics, if we suppose that objects must conform to our knowledge. Kants revolutionary idea that objects must conform to our knowledge rather than our knowledge conforming to objects can be effectively applied the idea that Gregors human identity is (seemingly) lost due to everyone elses rejection of him as someone, or something, with a human identity. Rather than using the terms objects and knowledge, people (who physically are objects) and socio-normative concepts are more comprehensible in this context. In Metamorphosis, Gregors parents socio-normative concepts cannot conform to post-transformation Gregor in any conventional sense; instead of seeing that this new identity of Gregor cannot be understood because of their deeply ingrained and limited socio-normative understanding. The idea of identity is all relative to what you have been taught or told to believe these socio-normative concepts. It is Grete, a girl who was still a 17 year old child that for the most part, tries to retain Gregors human identity. This theory that identity is relative is substantiated through Gretes relationship with Gregor. At the beginning of the story, Grete is not seen, behind the door with the parents, yet there is a significant difference. Grete is the only one who appreciates the gravity of the situation. She is already sobbing when she realises there is something wrong with her brother. This is yet another good example of Kafkas combination of his satire of society as well as humanity Grete, as well as her parents, is aware of this break in Gregors everyday monotonous routine, a break in the norm, yet we can see that she also genuinely cares for her brother. Gretes relationship with Gregor progresses in the most interesting way, following a complex character arc. Despite Gretes first attempts to retain Gregors identity through trying to see past the socio-normative concepts that she is restricted by, she cannot hold up the idea of this new Gregor. If the relation of free beings to one another is a relation of reciprocal interaction through intelligence and freedom, then this can be seen as an explanation for everyones rejection of his new identity. A human understanding of intelligence and freedom is bound by the fact that it only applies to what is human Gretes knowledge conforms to Gregors new form, rather than supposing that Gregors new form conforms to her limited knowledge. Her knowledge, and any humans knowledge, is the sum total of experiences through sensory perceptions, and Gregors considerable lack of human features and general incompatibility with peoples perceptions alienates him from his family. Not only is it Gregors new physical appearance/identity that is changed, but perhaps it is his loss of the ability to communicate with his family that is more significant and damaging to their relationship. It is an audacious and grandiose statement to say, yet it is almost a universal truth that communication lies at the heart of all conflicts in fiction. Therefore, Gregors inability to communicate with people creates conflict, as well as a fading in faith of his retention of his human identity through Fichtes theories that one individuals knowledge of the other is conditioned by the firsts treatment of the others treatment . The first sign of Gregors own realisation of his descent into his animal identity is hearing his animal voice, implying that he is listening to it as both an observer and a subject simultaneously. The subject of this sentence, Tiger Woods, is the agent who is performing the action: making a hole in one. In passive voice, the subject isn’t performing the action; it’s being acted upon by the agent: A hole in one was made by Tiger Woods. Most experts agree that active voice is preferable over passive voice wherever possible, and most writers know this. However, did you know that there’s another form of passive voice? This one is called divine passive voice. In a sentence using divine passive voice, no agent of action is ever identified: A hole in one was made. Since there’s no agent, the action in the sentence is considered an act of God- thus, divine passive voice. Granted, this is a tongue-in-cheek assessment because it’s pretty unlikely that the hole in one happened all by itself even though Tiger Woods is sometimes attributed with divinely inspired talent. Divine passive voice is most useful for obscuring information. Perhaps Tiger didn’t want to buy the customary round of drinks in the clubhouse to celebrate his hole in one, so he insisted that club officials keep his identity secret. Politicians and other bureaucrats are fond of divine passive voice. It appears to give complete information, and it sounds official, thereby duping readers: Mistakes were made. This portrays a Marxists reading as it shows how little power lower-class citizens were given because of their wealth and class. Another cultural aspect explored within Great Expectations is the position of women. Living in a patriarchal society women had few rights or opportunities. Women had little power, and the power they did possess was limited. Dickens compares the balance of power between men and women, thus creating a feminist reading. Dickens uses the female characters in the novel to convey the inequality amongst men and women. Characters such as Miss Havisham and Estella are used to show how some women did have power and explore how they were able to use their power within a male-dominated society. Miss Havisham is a strange and unique character which Dickens uses to portray the power and position of women in society.
